Layout Engineer
Texas InstrumentsJob Title
Layout Engineer
Role Summary
The Layout Engineer develops multi-dimensional IC layouts and detailed drawings from schematics, verifies designs using CAD and verification tools, and drives layouts through release to production. The role works closely with design, process, and packaging teams and mentors junior layout engineers.
Experience Level
Mid-level - typically requires 2β5 years of relevant layout experience.
Responsibilities
Primary duties include planning, executing, and delivering production-ready layouts and coordinating layout activities across teams.
- Define layout schedule, estimate effort, identify risks and mitigation plans for layout activities.
- Collaborate with designers to understand architecture and key IC requirements.
- Balance area, performance, and schedule during layout development.
- Coordinate with process development for PDK, P-cell and design rule updates.
- Work with packaging engineers to develop custom lead-frames and package solutions.
- Analyze and close issues related to electromigration, thermal gradients, ESD/LU performance, and layout parasitics.
- Develop test vehicles for new process and package technology development.
- Mentor and review work of junior and contract layout engineers to meet quality and schedule norms.
- Own final layout deliverables that meet the design expectations and checklist.
- Identify process, quality, or cycle-time improvements and lead initiatives to address them.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience for successful candidates.
- 2β5 years of IC layout experience, including full-chip layout from definition through production release.
- Strong LVS, DRC, ERC and antenna debug skills.
- Proficient in analog and mixed-signal layout techniques (device matching, power bus design, cross-talk mitigation, ESD/LU protection).
- Good understanding of layout parasitics (R, C, diodes, BJTs), device physics, and semiconductor fabrication processes.
- Experience with technology nodes such as 40nm, 65nm, 90nm, 130nm, 180nm, and BiCMOS processes.
- Familiarity with layout and verification tools: Virtuoso XL, Assura, PVS, Voltas.
- Experience or interest in automation / SKILL coding to reduce cycle time and improve quality is a plus.
- Strong teamwork, communication, documentation, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Engineering is typically required; example: Bachelor's in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. (The posting lists a bachelor's degree as the expected minimum.)
