Layout Designer Intern
Analog DevicesJob Title
Layout Designer Intern
Role Summary
Intern on the Custom Silicon Solutions (CSS) IC Layout team working with layout and circuit design engineers to convert transistor-level circuit designs into physical integrated circuit layouts. The role focuses on practical layout techniques, physical verification, and understanding how layout choices affect performance, area, reliability, and manufacturability.
The intern will join an international, cross-functional engineering team developing analogue and mixed-signal ICs using advanced semiconductor technologies. Specific tasks will be tailored to the candidate's interests and the team's needs.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship; suitable for current undergraduate or graduate students with limited professional experience.
Responsibilities
Typical responsibilities during the internship include learning, supporting, and documenting layout activities within the IC design flow.
- Work with IC Layout and IC Design engineers to learn layout methods and workflows.
- Translate block-level circuit designs into physical layouts under guidance.
- Use industry-standard layout and verification tools to implement analogue/mixed-signal blocks.
- Perform physical verification tasks including DRC and LVS and assist with debugging verification results.
- Document work clearly and present findings for peer review.
- Adapt responsibilities to match project needs and personal learning goals.
Requirements
Practical skills, personal qualities, and desirable tool experience for the internship.
Must-have
- Strong attention to detail and an organized approach to engineering work.
- Motivated problem solver with good technical writing, presentation, and communication skills.
- Self-motivated, thorough, and committed to continuous improvement; quick to learn new tools and concepts.
- No travel required for this role.
Nice-to-have
- Familiarity with semiconductor device physics and fabrication processes.
- Experience with Cadence Virtuoso or similar IC layout tools.
- Experience interpreting and debugging physical verification results (DRC, LVS).
Education Requirements
Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or an equivalent discipline (or equivalent practical experience is implied by the internship context).
