Job Title

Layout Design Engineer

Role Summary

As a Layout Design Engineer on Intel Foundry's layout team in Bangalore, you will create and verify custom layouts for analog, digital, and mixed-signal blocks, standard cell libraries, and memory compilers. The role focuses on physical array planning, area and wire optimization, and ensuring compliance with layout verification and reliability requirements.

Collaborate with circuit designers and tool engineers to improve layout methodologies and meet power, performance, and area (PPA) goals.

Experience Level

Entry-level β€” 0–1 years of relevant hands-on experience; candidates with a Master's degree and no prior professional experience are acceptable.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Develop and optimize custom layouts for analog, digital, mixed-signal blocks, memory compilers, and standard cell libraries.
  • Perform physical array planning, area optimization, and critical wire analysis.
  • Execute layout verification including DRC and LVS, and perform reliability analyses such as electromigration and IR drop.
  • Use placement and routing tools to produce manufacturable, high-quality layouts.
  • Provide feasibility feedback to circuit designers and implement layout changes.
  • Debug layout and tool-flow issues and drive improvements to layout methodologies and automation.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and tools:

  • Proficiency with EDA layout tools, specifically Cadence Virtuoso.
  • Experience with layout verification tools such as Calibre DRC and ICV.
  • Strong understanding of CMOS circuit design concepts and layout principles.
  • Ability to analyze and optimize for power, performance, and area (PPA).
  • Preferred: scripting skills (TCL, Python, Perl) for design automation.
  • Preferred: exposure to advanced process nodes and layout optimization techniques.
  • Effective collaboration and problem-solving skills.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field with 0–1 years of hands-on layout experience via internships, academic projects, coursework, or training. Alternatively, a Master's degree in a relevant field with no prior professional experience is acceptable. Related technical fields are acceptable; no specific certifications are required.
