Junior Silicon Photonics Design Engineer
Role Summary
Early-career engineering role on a silicon photonics design team responsible for contributing to the design, simulation, and characterization of photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Works closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to support component- and chip-level development through simulation, layout-aware checks, and lab correlation.
Experience Level
Entry-level — 0–2 years of relevant experience in silicon photonics, integrated optics, or a closely related area.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include simulation, layout support, and test correlation for silicon photonic components and small subsystems.
- Support the design and simulation of silicon photonic components (waveguides, modulators, photodetectors, couplers, splitters, heaters) and small subsystems.
- Run optical, electrical, and thermal simulations under guidance from senior engineers.
- Assist with PDK usage, design rule checks, and layout-aware simulations.
- Support chip tape-out activities, data analysis, and laboratory measurements.
- Help correlate simulation results with measurements and contribute to design documentation and reports.

- Must-have: 0–2 years experience in silicon photonics, integrated optics, or a closely related area.
- Must-have: Basic understanding of optical waveguides and common photonic components.
- Must-have: Basic knowledge of CMOS fabrication concepts and awareness of layout-to-silicon considerations.
- Must-have: Proficiency with data analysis and scripting (Python, MATLAB, or similar) and good problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills.
- Nice-to-have: Familiarity with photonic simulation tools (Lumerical, IPKISS, Photon Design or similar).
- Nice-to-have: Experience or exposure to PDK workflows, layout-aware simulation tools, or lab measurement techniques for photonics.
Education Requirements
BSc or MSc in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Applied Physics, or a related technical field. Coursework or thesis work in integrated photonics or optoelectronics is considered relevant.
