Junior Layout Design Engineer (Trainee)

Role Summary

Entry-level position in the Automotive Solutions Group supporting mask design and full-chip layout for advanced analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits. The role involves hands-on layout work, verification, and collaboration with layout designers and engineers on full-chip projects.

This is a 6-month trainee program with classroom instruction, assignments, exams, and mentorship designed to develop independent layout skills and progress along the layout career path.

Experience Level

Entry-level / trainee β€” suitable for new graduates or candidates with little to no prior professional layout experience.

Responsibilities

Work on all aspects of IC mask design and chip layout under supervision; tasks include:

  • Create full-chip floor plans and plan project schedules.
  • Perform hookup and routing of sub-cells and blocks; generate high-quality placements.
  • Implement basic power FET metallization and layout techniques.
  • Run and address verification checks: DRC, LVS, latchup, and antenna verification (Calibre).
  • Use Cadence Virtuoso Layout XL editor and basic Linux tools as part of the workflow.
  • Participate in training exercises, exams, and mentorship; study assigned materials to build independent capability.
  • Collaborate with local and global layout designers and engineers to support tape-out activities.

Requirements

  • Comfortable working on a computer continuously in a full-time role.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and spatial-awareness abilities.
  • Eager to learn with good memory retention; detail-oriented.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and accept change from innovation.

Nice-to-have:

  • Basic programming/coding experience.
  • Basic familiarity with Linux.

Education Requirements

Preferred: High school diploma or GED (General Education Diploma). Candidates should be at least 18 years old. No college degree is required; on-the-job training is provided.
