Junior Engineer, Tapeout Systems / Tapeout Operations

Role Summary

Entry-level engineering role within Global Tapeout and Mask Operations in Dresden focused on executing and improving tapeout processes that convert physical IC designs into photomask data. The position combines daily operational tasks with system design and cross-functional coordination to ensure timely, high-quality mask releases.

Entry-level β€” suitable for recent graduates or engineers with limited professional experience (approximately 0–3 years).

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include operational support, system development, and cross-team coordination to deliver accurate tapeouts on schedule.

  • Contribute to design and development of next-generation tapeout systems that produce photomask data from physical designs.
  • Perform daily tapeout operations such as Design Rule Checks (DRC), data preparation, and mask data validation.
  • Coordinate tapeout activities with fabs, OPC teams, tapeout logistics, and integration groups to support timely releases to RTM.
  • Identify and implement workflow improvements to increase efficiency, reduce cost, and shorten cycle times.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and support multiple concurrent projects with analytical problem-solving.
  • Create and maintain process documentation, best practices, and training materials.
  • Support process risk identification and mitigation efforts and follow Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and workplace capabilities; preferred items listed separately.

  • Knowledge of integrated circuit design and manufacturing in sub-micron technologies.
  • Experience with EDA tools for physical layout design and verification (examples: Mentor Calibre for DRC/LVS, Cadence Virtuoso).
  • Practical scripting experience (TCL, Python, Perl, Shell) for automation and data processing.
  • Comfortable using Linux/UNIX environments.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English (CEFR level C1 or equivalent).
  • Ability to work as a flexible team player and as a motivated individual contributor.

Nice-to-have:

  • Knowledge of the photomask making process and layout concepts such as KERF/FRAME design.
  • Familiarity with Structured Problem Solving (SPS) methods.
  • Technical program management experience.

Education Requirements

Master's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a related technical field.
