Job Title

Intern - SMS Pathfinding Engineering

Role Summary

As an intern on the Storage and Memory Systems (SMS) Pathfinding team, research photonic interconnect technologies and develop modeling and analysis tools to evaluate silicon photonic memory fabrics for disaggregated memory architectures targeting future AI systems. Deliver system-level tradeoff analysis and communicate technical findings to architects, researchers, and industry partners.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship; 0–2 years of relevant experience through research, internships, academic projects, publications, or coursework.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include modeling, analysis, validation, and cross-functional communication.

  • Develop parameterized photonic link-budget and system-level models covering lasers, modulators, waveguides, switches, photodetectors, and interconnect architectures.
  • Analyze performance, latency, bandwidth, power efficiency, reliability, and scalability tradeoffs across photonic memory architectures and memory technologies (HBM, DDR5, LPDDR).
  • Evaluate protocol and system-level impacts of CXL-based memory expansion and disaggregated memory architectures for AI workloads.
  • Apply AI-enabled tools to improve productivity, data analysis, modeling, and documentation.
  • Calibrate and validate models using industry data, simulations, proof-of-concept platforms, and measurements.
  • Collaborate with architects, researchers, and industry partners and communicate results via technical reports and presentations.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and attributes; preferred items listed where applicable.

  • 0–2 years of relevant experience through research, internships, academic projects, publications, or coursework.
  • Proficiency in Python and scientific computing tools for modeling, simulation, and data analysis.
  • Experience calibrating and validating models using simulations, measurements, or industry data.
  • Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and with external partners.
  • Preferred: experience with photonic link-budget analysis, optical transceivers, or photonic system modeling.
  • Preferred: familiarity with CXL, PCIe, memory fabrics, or memory expansion architectures.
  • Preferred: experience with photonic simulation tools (for example Lumerical, GDSFactory, MEEP, SAX, Simphony) and knowledge of AI infrastructure or GPU memory systems.
  • Preferred: publications, research contributions, or hands-on experience in photonic systems, optical networks, memory architectures, or experimental validation.

Education Requirements

Currently pursuing a Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Photonics, Optics, Applied Physics, or a related technical discipline. The posting requests coursework or research experience in silicon photonics, integrated optical devices, computer architecture, memory systems, interconnects, or system design. Equivalent practical experience via research internships or projects is considered.
