Intern - PHY Digital Design & Automation Engineer, HBM

Role Summary

Internship on the Heterogeneous Integration Group (HIG) HBM Architecture team supporting PHY digital design, verification, automation, and timing-analysis flows for next-generation High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) PHY and IO subsystems.

The role provides hands-on experience building RTL verification environments, Python automation tools, and AI-assisted workflows while collaborating with architecture, design, verification, and product engineering teams to improve design quality and productivity.

Experience Level

Entry-level (Internship). Intended for graduate students (Master's or Ph.D.) seeking practical experience in digital design, verification, and automation.

Responsibilities

Support engineering tasks across PHY digital design, verification, automation, and timing analysis.

  • Support digital design, integration, and timing analysis for HBM PHY and IO subsystems, including timing constraint development and timing closure work.
  • Develop and implement verification solutions using Verilog/SystemVerilog and UVM-style environments; analyze simulation results and debug functional or timing issues.
  • Create Python-based automation tools and AI-assisted engineering workflows that leverage Large Language Models (LLMs) and generative AI to improve engineering efficiency.
  • Collaborate with architecture, design, verification, and product engineering teams to evaluate features and validate architectures.
  • Document technical findings and present results in design reviews and engineering discussions.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience for successful internship performance.

  • Understanding of digital design fundamentals: FSMs, pipelining, clock-domain crossing (CDC), timing analysis, and basic computer architecture.
  • Experience with RTL design and verification concepts using Verilog or SystemVerilog.
  • Proficiency in Python, C++, or a comparable programming language; experience in Linux development environments.
  • Strong analytical, debugging, problem-solving, written communication, and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with digital implementation flows, static timing analysis (STA), timing closure methodologies, and timing constraint development.
  • Familiarity with UVM-based verification environments and regression infrastructure development.
  • Experience with EDA tools (Cadence, Synopsys, Siemens, or equivalent).
  • Exposure to automation, software development, data analytics, or AI-assisted workflows and LLM-based productivity tools.

Education Requirements

Currently pursuing a Master's or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field. Preferred subject exposure includes VLSI/digital systems, computer architecture, memory systems, timing analysis, or mixed-signal design. Equivalent practical experience is not specified.
