Job Title
Intern - MMP pFA Lab
Role Summary
This is an internship within Failure Analysis focused on establishing a practical viscosity measurement and control approach for Dykem red dye used in the Dye & Pry process. The work aims to improve confidence and repeatability of dye penetration results.
The intern will work with Failure Analysis (Dye & Pry process owners and lab operations) to design experiments, evaluate viscometer options, correlate viscosity to penetration outcomes, and recommend operational controls.
Experience Level
Entry-level / Internship. No specific years of professional experience specified.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities and expected outputs for the internship project.
- Develop and execute a test plan to measure Dykem red dye viscosity across defined reuse counts.
- Identify and evaluate viscometer options suited to low-viscosity Newtonian fluids with high sensitivity and minimal disturbance.
- Define a controlled measurement method, including temperature reference (e.g., 25°C) and repeatability checks.
- Measure and analyze viscosity vs. reuse-count, and correlate viscosity trends to Dye & Pry penetration quality indicators.
- Propose an operational control plan: viscosity acceptance window, reuse limits, storage/handling recommendations, and a simple use-vs-discard decision rule.
- Deliver documentation and a concise executive summary slide plus supporting appendix for lab leadership.
- Optional/stretch: implement a simple tracking method for reuse counts and viscosity checks, evaluate temperature impact, and recommend SOP updates.
Requirements
Minimum technical skills and attributes required to perform the role.
- Practical laboratory skills: careful sample handling, measurement, and basic data recording.
- Ability to design experiments and analyze quantitative datasets; familiarity with statistical repeatability checks.
- Experience or familiarity with fluid measurement instruments or willingness to evaluate and learn viscometer operation.
- Attention to detail, methodical documentation, and effective written and verbal communication for reporting results.
- Ability to work with lab operations and follow safety and lab procedures.
Education Requirements
Degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline is specified.
