Job Title

Intern - Memory & System Architecture Research

Role Summary

Join the Cloud Memory Business Unit to develop and validate first-principles system models that evaluate memory-centric architectures for rack-scale AI and datacenter platforms. The role focuses on characterizing AI workloads and producing quantitative analyses to guide memory technology and system-level decisions.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship intended for graduate students (M.S. or Ph.D.). Candidates are typically currently enrolled in a graduate program and comfortable with research-oriented, ambiguous problems.

Responsibilities

Conduct workload analysis, build and validate system performance models, and communicate quantified tradeoffs to inform architecture and product direction.

  • Characterize AI training and inference workloads to derive memory bandwidth, capacity, and latency requirements.
  • Develop analytical and simulation-based system models to evaluate memory-centric architectures at scale.
  • Assess system-level tradeoffs across emerging memory and integration technologies.
  • Benchmark models against reference data to improve accuracy and reproducibility.
  • Produce performance, efficiency, and cost analyses that inform long-term decisions.
  • Document findings in technical reports and contribute to invention disclosures as applicable.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience for immediate contribution; preferred items follow.

  • Strong background in computer architecture and system-level performance analysis (memory hierarchy, bandwidth, latency, scaling).
  • Ability to analyze complex memory and AI performance challenges and reason about tradeoffs quantitatively.
  • Proficiency in Python for building analytical models and performance analysis.
  • Experience with benchmarking, model validation, and ensuring reproducible results.
  • Good verbal and written communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Nice-to-have: familiarity with memory technologies (HBM, DDR, LPDDR, CXL, emerging memories).
  • Understanding of near-memory and advanced integration (3D stacking, chiplets, interposers, heterogeneous packaging).
  • Experience with AI systems and accelerators (GPU/ASIC) and design-space exploration.
  • Familiarity with simulation frameworks and reproducible experimentation workflows.

Education Requirements

Currently pursuing an M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Architecture, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field (graduate-level enrollment required).
