Intern - Engineer
Role Summary
Engineering intern supporting Microchip's Frequency and Time Systems (FTS) Government Systems group. The role contributes to R&D projects in precise time, frequency, and synchronization systems and delivers an assigned engineering design project with mentorship from a senior engineer.
Work involves hands-on embedded hardware and software tasks, circuit design support, test and validation, and collaboration with multi-discipline engineering teams.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship for students or early-career candidates. No specific prior years of industry experience required.
Responsibilities
Contribute to development and verification of precise timing products and R&D programs. Typical tasks include:
- Support development of product specifications and evaluate/select components and parts.
- Design, develop, and debug embedded systems and algorithms for timing, frequency, PNT, and RF applications.
- Develop, implement, and test Python scripts and C++ code; define scripting requirements with software team.
- Create, analyze, and support electronic circuit designs including PCBs and PCBA.
- Use digital test equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, multimeters) to validate designs.
- Collaborate with Systems, Hardware, Software, FPGA, and Mechanical engineers to meet customer requirements.
- Develop automation scripts and processes to improve engineering efficiency.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, site requirements, and practical abilities:
- Proficiency in designing, developing, and debugging embedded hardware and software systems.
- Familiarity with electronic components, FPGAs, microprocessors, solid-state memory, and logic devices.
- Knowledge of common interfaces and protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, USB).
- Experience using digital test equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, multimeters).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- US Citizenship or proof of Permanent US residency or protected individual status required (ITAR site).
Nice-to-have:
- Familiarity with precise timing applications and Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) systems.
- Experience with simulation, data processing, and analysis using Python or MATLAB.
- UNIX system administration skills and experience with Jenkins installations.
- Proficiency with PCB ECAD tools (PADS or Altium preferred) and strong schematic-level circuit design skills.
Education Requirements
Undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a Bachelor's, Master’s, or Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a similar technical field from an accredited university.
