Field Applications Engineer (FAE)

Role Summary

Provide technical sales support to drive adoption of Altera FPGA solutions at customer accounts. Work with sales, product, and engineering teams to position FPGA-based architectures, deliver technical demonstrations, and ensure customer designs meet requirements.

Experience Level

Mid-level — the posting requests an experienced hardware engineer (approximately 3+ years of relevant experience).

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Drive FPGA adoption at assigned customer accounts and identify new opportunities.
  • Collaborate with field sales, FAEs, factory applications, product marketing, and business development.
  • Build and maintain relationships with customer engineering teams.
  • Demonstrate product value and position FPGA solutions for specific customer applications.
  • Support architecture definition, solution evaluation, and design implementation using FPGAs, IP, and development tools.
  • Develop and deliver technical demonstrations and participate in on-site customer design reviews.
  • Diagnose, reproduce, and resolve or escalate customer technical issues.
  • Provide timely feedback to manufacturing and product teams on product issues and market requirements.

Requirements

Must-have and preferred technical qualifications (education items are summarized in the Education Requirements section below):

  • Must-have: ~3+ years of hardware engineering experience, including FPGA, ASIC, and/or digital design.
  • Must-have: Experience with FPGA development tools (examples: Quartus, Vivado).
  • Must-have: Experience with hardware description languages or high-level synthesis (VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog, OpenCL, HLS).
  • Must-have: Ability to perform technical demonstrations and support on-site customer visits; willingness to travel as needed.
  • Must-have: Eligibility for any required U.S. export authorizations.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience in technical sales, applications, or product marketing roles.
  • Nice-to-have: Additional industry experience such as embedded SoC design, ASIC/ASSP, CPU/microcontroller architecture, ARM-based solutions, board-level design, DSP, or signal integrity.

Education Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or a related electrical/electronic degree is stated. Post‑bachelor's degrees (master's/PhD) are listed as preferred.
