Job Title

Intern - Clock Design & Architecture

Role Summary

Join the Heterogeneous Integration Group (HIG) HBM Architecture team to evaluate and improve clocking architectures, PLL performance, timing behavior, and clock distribution strategies for next-generation HBM used in AI, HPC, networking, and data-center systems.

The intern will work with architects and engineers to run analyses, build models, benchmark alternatives, and apply AI-assisted engineering workflows to accelerate design exploration and recommendations.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship - targeted at graduate students (Master's or Ph.D.) pursuing advanced studies in relevant technical fields.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Analyze and document HBM clocking architectures, clock distribution networks, WDQS timing architecture, and PLL design concepts.
  • Evaluate clock noise sensitivity, timing margins, jitter, and PLL impacts on high-speed I/O signal quality.
  • Benchmark alternative clock architecture solutions and provide data-driven recommendations.
  • Identify opportunities for performance optimization and support architecture-level design decisions.
  • Apply Large Language Models, Generative AI, and AI-assisted engineering workflows to improve analysis, data evaluation, and productivity.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience:

  • Solid understanding of analog and mixed-signal circuit fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with clock generation and distribution concepts (PLLs, DLLs), jitter, and timing analysis.
  • Experience with circuit simulation tools such as SPICE, Spectre, HSPICE, MATLAB, or equivalents.
  • Strong analytical, debugging, problem-solving, and written/verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-have:

  • Knowledge of timing analysis metrics, clock quality, signal integrity, and power integrity.
  • Exposure to Generative AI or LLMs used for engineering productivity and data analysis.
  • Experience scripting with Python or similar languages for automation and data analysis.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor design methodologies, architecture evaluation, or high-speed memory systems.

Education Requirements

Currently pursuing a Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline. Relevant coursework or research in analog/mixed-signal design, PLLs, timing analysis, clocking systems, or high-speed interfaces is preferred.
