Job Title
IC Design Engineer
Role Summary
The IC Design Engineer will perform and lead backend physical design (place & route) activities for complex SoC blocks, driving right-first-time silicon. Work includes floorplanning, placement, CTS, routing, extraction, timing closure, ECOs and physical verification within advanced nodes.
Position is part of a chip design team working on SoC physical implementation; the role emphasizes delivery quality, automation, and cross-site collaboration.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Typical experience expectation: approximately 6β8+ years of relevant backend/physical design experience.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Perform block- and top-level floorplanning, partitioning, placement, clock-tree synthesis, routing and physical verification for SoC designs.
- Drive timing closure: STA, extraction, signoff runs and timing/ECO implementation.
- Execute functional and timing ECOs to meet design specifications.
- Integrate top-down and bottom-up physical design flows for advanced nodes (5nm and below).
- Use and adapt P&R, extraction and physical verification flows to achieve quality and schedule targets.
- Develop and maintain automation to improve turnaround time and reduce manual work.
- Troubleshoot tool and flow issues; capture and apply lessons to improve processes.
- Collaborate across functional teams and multiple sites/time zones to meet project milestones.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Deep understanding of backend digital design and physical implementation flow (P&R, CTS, routing, extraction, signoff).
- Proficiency with timing and physical constraints and STA closure processes.
- Hands-on experience with backend EDA tools such as Genus, Innovus, Quantus, Tempus, Design Compiler, Star-RCXT/PT, PrimeRail/Voltus, Redhawk.
- Proficiency in scripting for automation; strong experience with Tcl and Perl.
- Ability to implement timing and functional ECOs and to work toward signoff quality.
- Strong analytical skills and proven ability to improve turn-around-time and deliver higher quality results.
- Experience collaborating in multi-functional, cross-site or cross-time-zone teams.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience in 5nm and smaller process nodes and familiarity with SoC-level top integration nuances.
- Experience with building or adapting large-scale automation flows for reuse.
Education Requirements
MS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science with ~6+ years experience, or BS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science with ~8+ years experience.
