Hermetic Packaging Process Development Engineer
LumentumJob Title
Hermetic Packaging Process Development Engineer
Role Summary
Responsible for developing and transferring hermetic sealing and assembly processes for free-space optical systems used in Optical Cross Connect Switch (OCS) and Wavelength-Selective Switch (WSS) products. Works within the Advanced Packaging & Integration group to move concepts from prototype to high-volume manufacturing.
This is an on-site engineering role focused on process design, characterization, optimization and production transfer for hermetic packaging of photonic modules.
Experience Level
Mid-level. The role expects approximately 5+ years of relevant engineering experience in packaging or process development.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include process development, prototype characterization, and supporting scale-up into production.
- Develop and validate hermetic packaging processes for free-space optical systems in collaboration with product, tooling and manufacturing partners.
- Invent and evaluate new hermetic sealing methods; contribute to process toolbox and IP generation.
- Design and execute experiments to resolve process unknowns and optimize performance and yield.
- Characterize prototypes and document results to support production transfer and NPI activities.
- Support product lifecycle from development through volume production, including occasional travel (~5%, primarily to Asia).
- Provide technical consultation, peer review and cross-team support within the Hermetics and Advanced Packaging teams.
Requirements
Required skills and experience (must-have) and additional desirable skills (nice-to-have).
Must-have:
- Minimum ~5 years of experience in process development, packaging or related engineering roles.
- Practical and theoretical knowledge of materials used in optical packaging (metals, solders, glasses, adhesives).
- Understanding of heat transfer, basic electrical circuits, and automated machinery/instrumentation.
- Experience developing assembly processes and associated equipment for volume production.
- Able to read and define mechanical drawing specifications and requirements.
- Proven ability to design and run experiments, analyze data, and make data-driven decisions.
- Strong attention to detail, accountability, and clear oral/written communication for program-level reporting and documentation.
Nice-to-have:
- Six Sigma certification or equivalent statistical process characterization skills.
- Practical experience with package fabrication methods (resistance/laser welding, solder sealing, helium leak testing, glove boxes, CMMs, 3D printing).
- Familiarity with optoelectronic product development from prototyping to NPI/volume production.
- Software development experience (any language) and CAD proficiency (SolidEdge, SolidWorks or equivalent).
- Basic machine-shop skills (mill, lathe, drill press) and knowledge of telecom reliability and test methods.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or MSc degree in Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related engineering or physical science discipline.
