Job Title

HBM PHY System Architect

Role Summary

Design and own the system architecture for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) PHYs within a mixed-signal IP team. Work across SoC, memory, package, and validation teams to define and deliver high-performance, low-power, and reliable PHY solutions from concept through production.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Candidates should have around 5+ years of relevant HBM PHY architecture and high-speed memory interface experience; role expects significant hands-on architecture and cross-functional leadership.

Responsibilities

The role focuses on system definition, timing and margin management, and cross-team execution for HBM PHY designs.

  • Own HBM PHY architecture and system definition to meet performance, power, area, and reliability targets.
  • Develop and manage system timing budgets across on-die and off-chip interfaces.
  • Perform timing closure, margin analysis, link budgeting, and PHY training strategy.
  • Lead cross-functional architectural trade-offs and coordinate execution with SoC, memory, package, and validation teams.
  • Drive technical direction and ensure alignment with product roadmap and production/validation requirements.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience; preferred items listed separately.

  • 5+ years experience in HBM PHY architecture and design for high-performance memory interfaces.
  • Strong understanding of JEDEC memory standards (HBM, LPDDR, DDR) and how they apply to PHY architecture.
  • Expertise in link budgeting, timing closure, margin analysis, and PHY training methodologies.
  • Proven ability to lead technical discussions and collaborate with globally distributed, cross-functional teams.

Nice-to-have:

  • Familiarity with signal integrity (SI), power integrity (PI), package effects, and power delivery networks for high-speed memory systems.
  • Knowledge of advanced process technologies, mixed-signal design principles, and high-speed interface implementation.
  • Experience with design-for-yield, manufacturability, and production challenges for high-speed links.
  • Proficiency in Unix/Linux and scripting (Perl, TCL, Python) for automation and analysis.

Education Requirements

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (listed as required for this posting). Preferred: Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. The posting also allows equivalent combinations of degree and experience: Bachelor’s +6+ years, Master’s +5+ years, or PhD +4+ years in Science, Engineering, or related fields.
