Hardware System Test Engineer
FractileJob Title
Hardware System Test Engineer
Role Summary
Design, implement and maintain system-level hardware defect detection and diagnostic tests for server and rack systems used in high-performance AI infrastructure. You will work with hardware, software, manufacturing, service and reliability teams to ensure tests detect assembly, interconnect, thermal and component faults and are suitable for factory and field use.
Some roles may require export-control eligibility checks due to regulated technologies.
Experience Level
Mid-level β typically 3β7 years of experience in system, server, or hardware test engineering, preferably in manufacturing or service environments.
Responsibilities
Develop and operate fast, deterministic hardware tests with clear pass/fail criteria for manufacturing, service and field diagnostics.
- Create and maintain tests to detect assembly defects, marginal components, damaged hardware, cabling/interconnect issues, and cooling faults.
- Develop PCIe-focused tests to detect lane faults, link degradation, polarity issues, retimer problems and intermittent connectivity failures.
- Implement stress and soak tests to expose latent or temperature-dependent failures.
- Build RMA triage and repair-validation diagnostics and preventative maintenance tests.
- Debug test failures and perform root-cause analysis; escalate hardware or process issues when required.
- Analyze factory and field failure data to identify coverage gaps and improve tests.
- Support deployment, versioning and maintenance of test software across factory and service environments.
- Collaborate with software and system teams to integrate tests into production system software and operational procedures.
Requirements
Must-have qualifications and skills for day-one impact, followed by useful additional experience.
- 3β7 years experience in system, server, or hardware test engineering, preferably in manufacturing or service environments.
- Solid understanding of server hardware architectures, PCIe fabrics, power delivery and cooling systems; familiarity with common failure modes.
- Hands-on experience developing or executing hardware defect detection or diagnostic tests.
- Experience working in Linux-based test environments.
- Familiarity with BMC-based systems and basic use of OpenBMC or Redfish interfaces.
- Strong debugging and root-cause analysis skills; ability to distinguish test artifacts from real hardware faults.
- Ability to write clear, maintainable test code, logs and operational documentation.
- Nice-to-have: experience with AI accelerators/GPUs, high-performance compute servers, PCIe Gen4/5/6, and thermally complex or liquid-cooled platforms.
Education Requirements
Not specified.
