Hardware Engineering Intern

Role Summary

Support an HPE hardware engineering team in R&D and lab environments to assist development, validation, and quality activities for networking and board-level hardware. Work with cross-functional teams to execute assigned technical tasks and contribute to hardware bring-up and troubleshooting.

Experience Level

Entry-level / Internship - intended for university students; no professional years-of-experience required.

Responsibilities

Work under supervision to complete technical tasks that advance product development and lab verification.

  • Support senior engineers on assigned technical projects and deliverables.
  • Help identify, reproduce, and troubleshoot hardware and system issues.
  • Provide hands-on lab support for hardware quality initiatives and propose practical fixes.
  • Interface with cross-functional teams during the product development cycle.
  • Perform tests and validation using Ethernet packet generators and other lab equipment.
  • Participate in periodic reviews to report progress and incorporate feedback.
  • Complete tasks assigned by a supervisor in a timely manner.

Requirements

Practical hardware engineering skills and hands-on lab experience are required. Below are concise must-have and nice-to-have items.

Must-have:
  • Proven experience with electrical circuit and schematic design and schematic capture tools.
  • Hands-on board design/layout awareness, including multi-layer board considerations.
  • Experience testing L2/L3 products using Ethernet packet generators or equivalent test equipment.
  • Working knowledge of PCIe, Ethernet, I2C and high-speed SerDes at the hardware level.
  • Basic scripting ability in Python and comfortable in Unix/Linux environments.
  • Strong debugging skills and experience working on team projects.
Nice-to-have:
  • Familiarity with FPGAs and Verilog.
  • Understanding of CPU subsystem design, clocks, signal integrity and power delivery.
  • Knowledge of Ethernet routing and switching concepts.

Education Requirements

Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering; enrollment as a university/college student is expected (internship for students during school breaks or part-time while enrolled). No explicit mention of equivalent experience or alternative degrees.
