Hardware Engineer
Role Summary
Design and develop FPGA-based and microcontroller-based electronic safe-and-arm devices (fuzes) for DOD weapon systems. Focus areas include architecture, Verilog FPGA design, SystemVerilog UVM verification, and C# firmware for embedded controllers.
Work includes ASIC/FPGA designs with sensor interfaces, A/D and D/A, communication protocols, state machines, and timing chains.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Typical experience pathways described: Bachelor's + 6+ years, Master's + 4+ years, or 10+ years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
Responsibilities
Primary duties include design, verification, and debugging of FPGA/hardware and embedded firmware.
- Analyze requirements and define architecture for FPGA, hardware, and microcontroller products.
- Develop Verilog HDL targeting antifuse and enhanced flash FPGAs.
- Implement SystemVerilog UVM-based verification environments and run simulation-based verification.
- Develop and maintain C and C# firmware for microcontrollers and embedded systems.
- Debug and profile functional and performance issues in lab and target environments.
- Use lab instrumentation (logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, JTAG/ICE, protocol analyzers) to validate designs.
- Contribute to process improvements: design verification, code reviews, unit testing, prototyping, and product testing.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and tools.
- Proven experience with Verilog for logic design and HDL-based digital design flows.
- Embedded C programming experience: algorithm development, data structures, and optimized code for constrained targets.
- Experience with hardware debug and test equipment (logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, JTAG/ICE, protocol analyzers).
- Familiarity with hardware, software, and firmware development methodologies and verification practices.
- Experience with source control systems such as Subversion (SVN), Git, or TFS.
- Hands-on experience developing and debugging FPGA-based products in lab or production test environments.
Nice-to-have:
- SystemVerilog verification experience with AVM, VMM, OVM, or UVM.
- Familiarity with Microsemi/Actel FPGAs and QuestaSim simulation tool.
- C# development experience targeting enhanced flash microcontrollers.
- Experience with safety-critical or defense-system hardware (fuzes) is a plus.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 6 years of related experience; or a graduate degree with a minimum of 4 years of related experience; or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 10 years of related experience.
