Job Title
Hardware and System Engineer Intern, 5G & 6G
Role Summary
Internship role supporting R&D and product development for 5G/6G wireless technologies. The intern will focus on one primary area β hardware engineering, system engineering, or software/protocol stack β while collaborating across disciplines on algorithm design, specification development, prototyping, testing and product integration.
This is a volunteer, unpaid internship offered as a remote position. The role requires close interaction with internal teams and external collaborators to deliver engineering tasks that align with customer requirements and industrial standards.
Experience Level
Entry-level (internship). No specific years of prior professional experience required; suitable for current students or recent graduates seeking practical R&D experience in wireless systems.
Responsibilities
Work as part of the engineering team through all stages of technology and product development.
- Participate in research, specification design, algorithm development, hardware/software design, prototyping, testing and data analysis.
- Select and develop work in one primary focus area (hardware, system, or software) while learning adjacent domains.
- Translate customer requirements into feature and product specifications; iterate designs to meet requirements.
- Execute development procedures, maintain design quality, and follow verification and validation workflows.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners on integration, testing, manufacturing, and customer support tasks.
- Analyze feedback from customer support and marketing to identify issues and implement improvements.
- Document designs, test results, and development notes to support cross-team work and future handover.
Requirements
Candidates should demonstrate technical aptitude and professional behaviors suitable for an engineering R&D internship.
Must-have:
- Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and compliance with development procedures.
- Analytical problem-solving skills, strong learning ability, adaptability, and multitasking/prioritization skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Interest in and exposure to hardware or system engineering or software/protocol development for wireless systems (coursework, projects, or prior internship experience).
Technical focus areas (choose one):
- Hardware focus: exposure to digital hardware or analog/RF development; familiarity with FPGA/ASIC workflows, RTL, signal-processing implementation, mixed-signal front-end concepts, RF chain components, or antenna/MIMO concepts.
- System focus: simulation and evaluation of algorithms against 5G system specifications, familiarity with 3GPP concepts (PHY/L2/L3), algorithm optimization for hardware constraints, and mathematical foundations (probability, estimation, matrix methods).
- Software focus: protocol stack or algorithm implementation and integration with simulation or hardware platforms (not extensively detailed in source).
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with FPGA and multi-core CPU integration, UVM/testbench experience, ASIC physical design exposure, or machine learning applied to algorithm evaluation.
- Familiarity with digital beamforming, digital up/down conversion, digital pre-distortion, and real-world RF subsystem integration.
Education Requirements
BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or related engineering/science fields.
