Job Title

Hardware and System Engineer Intern, 5G & 6G

Role Summary

Internship on an engineering team developing 5G/6G wireless technologies and products. Interns pick a primary focus (hardware engineering or system engineering) and contribute to specification, design, prototyping, testing, and product integration.

This position is a volunteer unpaid internship and is listed as remote.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship suitable for current students or recent graduates; no specific minimum professional experience stated.

Responsibilities

Support research and product development across the technology lifecycle. Responsibilities include:

  • Participate in R&D, specification writing, and design tasks for wireless systems.
  • Develop and evaluate algorithms, hardware designs, and software/protocol components.
  • Build prototypes, run simulations and tests, and perform data analysis to validate designs.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to integrate digital front end, RF subsystems, and antenna arrays.
  • Follow development procedures, maintain documentation, and ensure design quality through verification and review.
  • Work with customer support and product teams to collect feedback and implement improvements.

Requirements

Core professional and technical expectations. Candidates should choose and focus on one primary area (hardware or system).

  • Must-have (professional): teamwork, attention to detail, procedure compliance, strong learning ability, multitasking, prioritization, and clear written/verbal communication.
  • Must-have (technical, hardware focus): experience with digital hardware or analog/RF hardware development such as FPGA/ASIC implementation, RTL and verification, digital front-end design, or RF component work (MIMO arrays, up/downconverters, PAs, LNAs).
  • Must-have (technical, system focus): simulation and evaluation of algorithms against 5G system specifications, familiarity with 3GPP physical channels and signaling, and ability to optimize algorithms for hardware constraints.
  • Experience with prototyping, integration of FPGA and multi-core CPU platforms, and performance/timing optimization.
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills, including signal processing, detection/estimation, matrix methods, and optimization techniques.
  • Nice-to-have: UVM testbench experience, ASIC physical design exposure, machine learning applied to algorithm evaluation, and L2/L3 protocol stack knowledge for scheduling and higher-layer algorithms.

Education Requirements

BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or related engineering/science fields; or equivalent practical experience.
