GPU Power Engineer
QualcommJob Title
GPU Power Engineer
Role Summary
Design and optimize GPU power and performance across pre-silicon and post-silicon stages. The role sits in the GPU ASICs Engineering team and focuses on power modeling, workload characterization, and verification to reduce power while meeting performance targets.
Experience Level
Mid-level. The posting lists varying minima depending on degree (from ~1β2 years with advanced degrees up to 5+ years); preferred experience includes 8+ years in related architecture or VLSI work.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include analysis, modeling, testing, and cross-team collaboration to improve GPU power behavior.
- Analyze GPU architecture and microarchitecture for performance and power optimization opportunities.
- Build and maintain GPU power models and estimators for projection and correlation.
- Profile and characterize workloads to identify power/performance trade-offs.
- Develop and maintain tests for pre-silicon and post-silicon power verification.
- Collaborate with RTL designers, architects, verification, compiler, driver, silicon implementation, and post-silicon teams.
- Support integration of power analysis into design and verification flows.
Requirements
Must-have and desired technical skills and experience. Degree information is summarized under Education Requirements below.
- Must-have: Hands-on experience with low-power ASIC optimization and power-aware design techniques.
- Must-have: Scripting experience in Python or Perl for analysis and automation.
- Must-have: GPU workload analysis, profiling, and characterization experience.
- Must-have: Ability to develop and run power verification tests in pre- and post-silicon environments.
- Must-have: Strong software/hardware tool skills: C/C++, Assembly, Verilog/SystemVerilog, and design verification practices.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with industry power tools (e.g., PrimeTime PX, PowerArtist) and familiarity with graphics APIs (Vulkan, DirectX, OpenGL) or GPU compute frameworks (OpenCL, CUDA).
- Nice-to-have: Experience with GPU driver or compiler development and advanced CPU/GPU architecture/microarchitecture design.
Education Requirements
Requires a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field. A Master's or PhD in those fields is listed as preferred/optional. The posting also accepts equivalent practical experience in lieu of a degree.
