GPU Performance Architect

Role Summary

Work on GPU architecture and performance analysis within AMD's Architecture team to identify bottlenecks, model behaviors, and propose power/performance/area (PPA) improvements for graphics and compute workloads.

Collaborate with architects, engineers, and managers across sites on game, AI/ML, and compute applications. This onsite role is located in Austin, TX and is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Analyze workloads (games, AI/ML, compute) and competitive architectures to identify performance bottlenecks.
  • Decompose complex technical problems, evaluate trade-offs, and recommend solutions.
  • Work with architects to understand bottlenecks in graphics cores and SoCs.
  • Analyze existing and emerging graphics/compute paradigms and algorithms.
  • Implement and run simulation models (RTL and high-level) to estimate potential gains.
  • Propose innovative solutions to improve PPA and drive improvements to RTG analysis tools.
  • Collaborate with cross-site engineering teams and present analysis and recommendations.

Requirements

Must-have and nice-to-have skills:

  • Must-have: Strong C/C++ and scripting (Python) skills; experience in architecture and performance analysis for GPUs or SoCs.
  • Must-have: Knowledge of graphics/compute APIs (DirectX, Vulkan, CUDA, HIP) and familiarity with GPU compilers.
  • Must-have: Experience implementing and running simulation models and using profiling/analysis tools.
  • Nice-to-have: Kernel development for LLMs using PyTorch, Triton, CUDA, HIP.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with GFX profiling tools (PIX, RenderDoc, AMD tools).
  • Nice-to-have: Experience applying AI/ML techniques and collaborating with AI agents in engineering workflows.

Education Requirements

Bachelor of Science, Master's, or PhD preferred in Electrical Engineering, Computer Architecture, Computer Science, or related technical fields. (Degree preferred; equivalent practical experience not specified.)
