Functional Safety Hardware Engineer
Role Summary
The Functional Safety Hardware Engineer coordinates and leads functional safety activities for automotive and industrial IP products. You will develop safety work products (safety plans, safety cases), drive safety analyses, and act as the project liaison to product management, quality, and safety assessors.
Based in Austin, TX, this role works within a hardware verification/design team and follows a hybrid working pattern.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Typical experience expectation is in the mid-career range (roughly 5β7 years of relevant VLSI hardware design experience depending on degree). See Education Requirements for degree and years guidance.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop and maintain functional safety work products such as Safety Plan and Safety Case reports following established methodologies.
- Lead and drive safety analysis activities (FMEA, FMEDA, DFA) and produce associated documentation.
- Work with product management to establish functional safety requirements for the product.
- Support project planning for safety activities, including resource estimation and training.
- Assist safety leads during functional safety assessments and help deploy continual improvement initiatives for safety practices.
- Act as liaison between the project team, quality management, and external/internal safety assessors.
Requirements
Must-have technical competencies and skills:
- Proficiency in hardware design and development and hardware description languages (e.g., Verilog, VHDL).
- Software/programming skills such as C, C++, Perl, or Python for tooling and analysis tasks.
- Knowledge of hardware failure modes and safety mechanisms.
- Practical experience applying safety analysis methodologies such as FMEA, FMEDA, and DFA.
- Strong interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.
- Experience with VLSI hardware design and development (without specifying degree-based years here).
Nice-to-have:
- Experience applying industry safety standards such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508.
- Exposure to safety-critical automotive/industrial domains (ADAS, AD, IVI, digital cockpit, robotics).
- Experience authoring and reviewing technical documentation and performing fault simulation/analysis.
Education Requirements
Either: BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering (or equivalent) plus 7+ years of VLSI hardware design experience; or MS in Electrical or Computer Engineering plus 5+ years of VLSI hardware design experience. Fields referenced: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering. Equivalent practical experience is acknowledged.
