Functional Safety Architect

Role Summary

The Functional Safety Architect defines, analyzes, and validates functional safety concepts and architectures for embedded hardware and software systems in automotive products. The role supports development of safety requirements, performs safety analyses, reviews verification/validation plans, and works with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with automotive safety standards.

Experience Level

Mid-level. The role expects approximately 6–8 years of hands-on experience in functional safety design and development for Tier 1 or Tier 2 automotive suppliers.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities focus on developing safety concepts, performing analyses, and supporting implementation and customer enablement.

  • Develop functional and technical safety concepts for SoC and embedded systems.
  • Capture and manage safety requirements in requirements-management tools.
  • Perform safety analyses such as FTA, DFA and FMEDA.
  • Review and contribute to safety verification and validation plans.
  • Support safety audits, assessments, and internal safety reviews.
  • Assist customers with safety products and provide tailored safety solutions using company products.

Requirements

Core technical and practical skills required for the role.

  • Proven experience in functional safety design and development for automotive products (Tier 1/2 suppliers).
  • Strong knowledge of microcontroller and microprocessor use-cases, applications, and architecture for automotive systems.
  • Practical understanding of ISO 26262 or IEC 61508 based development lifecycles and safety work products.
  • Strong understanding of IP- and SoC-level safety mechanisms and mitigation techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with safety-analysis tools (example: Medini) for FTA, DFA and FMEDA.
  • Experience supporting customers and providing technical safety guidance.

Preferred:

  • Experience in semiconductor product development.
  • Experience with safety audits/assessments and requirements-management tools (e.g., DOORS Next, ELM).

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Electrical, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. Equivalent professional experience in functional safety may be acceptable where stated.
