FPGA Silicon Design Engineer
AlteraJob Title
FPGA Silicon Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design, verify, implement, and support silicon bring-up for next-generation FPGA devices. Work across architecture, verification, physical design, software/firmware, and product teams to deliver high-performance, power-efficient FPGA solutions.
This role focuses on RTL development, backend ASIC physical implementation, timing and power analysis, and post-silicon debug for production-ready devices.
Experience Level
Senior - requires substantial industry experience; posting specifies 8+ years of industry experience in FPGA or ASIC silicon design with multiple 5+ year skill areas.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include design, implementation, verification, and silicon bring-up of FPGA logic and full-chip integrations.
- Architect, design, and implement complex digital logic (general-purpose logic, specialized blocks, control logic, interconnects).
- Develop, review, and maintain production-quality RTL using Verilog and/or SystemVerilog.
- Define and execute design verification plans (UVM, constrained-random, SystemVerilog Assertions).
- Execute and support backend ASIC physical design flow: synthesis, floorplanning, placement, CTS, routing, STA, timing closure, and power analysis.
- Analyze and optimize designs for performance, power, and area (PPA).
- Use industry-standard EDA tools for simulation, synthesis, place-and-route, STA, and power analysis.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define specs, resolve integration issues, and manage dependencies.
- Contribute to silicon bring-up, post-silicon debug, characterization, and root-cause analysis.
- Produce and maintain design specs, verification plans, analysis reports, and technical presentations.
- Participate in design and code reviews and communicate technical risks and trade-offs.
- Develop scripting and automation to improve design, verification, and regression workflows.
Requirements
Must-have technical experience and eligibility requirements are listed first; preferred skills are listed separately.
- Authorized to work in the United States without employer-sponsored immigration support and eligible for required U.S. government contract requirements.
- 8+ years industry experience in FPGA or ASIC silicon design.
- 5+ years designing and implementing complex digital logic and RTL with Verilog and/or SystemVerilog.
- 5+ years hands-on experience with backend ASIC physical design flows (synthesis, floorplanning, placement, CTS, routing, STA, timing closure, power analysis).
- 5+ years using industry-standard EDA tools (simulation, synthesis, P&R, STA, power analysis) from vendors such as Synopsys, Cadence, or Siemens.
- 5+ years applying digital design principles: CDC, reset architecture, clocking, asynchronous interfaces, FSMs, pipelining, low-power techniques.
- 5+ years developing and executing verification strategies with SystemVerilog, UVM, SVA, simulation, waveform analysis, and coverage-based debug.
- 5+ years scripting and automation experience (Python, Perl, Tcl, Shell) in Unix/Linux environments.
- Proven ability to analyze and resolve complex design issues and communicate technical information across teams.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with FPGA architecture, programmable logic resources, configuration controllers, or network-on-chip architectures.
- Experience supporting silicon bring-up, post-silicon validation, hardware characterization, or production readiness.
- Experience with power-intent methodologies, formal verification, linting, CDC analysis, or equivalence checking.
- Familiarity with revision-control systems such as Git or Perforce and mentoring/leadership experience.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field is required (posting specifies Bachelor's plus 8+ years). Preferred: Master's or Ph.D. in those fields (posting lists Master's/Ph.D. as preferred). No certifications were specified.
