Job Title

FPGA Machine Learning Engineering - Graduate Intern

Role Summary

Graduate intern on the FPGA Machine Learning team developing IP blocks and hardware solutions to accelerate machine learning inference on Altera FPGAs. The role focuses on quantization schemes, performance optimization, and integrating work into the FPGA AI Suite hardware/software stack.

Experience Level

Entry-level (Graduate intern). Targeted at current Master's or PhD students; no specific years of prior professional experience required.

Responsibilities

The intern will support design, implementation, and evaluation activities to improve ML inference on FPGAs.

  • Design and evaluate quantization schemes optimized for FPGA hardware.
  • Develop and prototype IP blocks and hardware modules to accelerate ML workloads.
  • Work with the FPGA AI Suite hardware and software stacks to integrate and validate solutions.
  • Implement prototypes using Verilog, VHDL, HLS, or software components in C/C++ or Python.
  • Analyze performance/resource trade-offs and optimize for throughput, latency, and area.
  • Run experiments, collect metrics, and document results.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers, participate in design reviews, and contribute to technical documentation.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and abilities for immediate contribution.

  • Solid understanding of digital hardware concepts (dataflow, pipelining, memory hierarchies).
  • Foundational knowledge of machine learning algorithms, particularly quantization techniques and their hardware implications.
  • Experience with at least one of the following: FPGA design (Verilog, VHDL, HLS) or proficiency in C/C++, Python.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team and communicate clearly in writing and verbally.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience deploying ML models or running inference on FPGA platforms.
  • Exposure to Altera / Intel FPGAs or similar architectures.
  • Familiarity with ML frameworks and quantization workflows (TensorFlow, PyTorch).

Education Requirements

Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
