FPGA Hardware Board Design Engineer
AlteraJob Title
FPGA Hardware Board Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design and deliver end-to-end hardware platforms, from platform requirements through schematic capture, PCB layout, and board tape-out. Collaborate with architects, validation, firmware, mechanical, thermal, and manufacturing teams to ensure platform performance, power, and cost targets are met.
Experience Level
Senior-level - requires 8+ years of hardware board design lifecycle experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include technical leadership of board design and platform bring-up.
- Drive end-to-end hardware platform design from requirements to production-ready board packages.
- Translate system architecture into circuit and component-level specifications.
- Develop and review schematics, PCB layout, stack-ups, and high-speed routing constraints.
- Perform or review design simulations (SI/PI/thermal) and trade-off analyses.
- Define component selection, BOM optimization, and mitigate part availability risks.
- Lead board bring-up, power-on, debugging, and early platform validation in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Resolve system-level issues across electrical, firmware, mechanical, thermal, and manufacturing domains.
- Document design packages and oversee handoff through tape-out and manufacturing.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; optional items listed as nice-to-have.
- Must-have: 8+ years of experience in hardware board design lifecycle.
- Strong expertise in processor-, FPGA-, and SoC-based system design and integration.
- Proficiency in circuit design, analysis, and simulation for high-speed digital, analog, and mixed-signal designs.
- Hands-on experience with EDA tools such as Concept HDL, OrCAD, Cadence Allegro, or equivalent.
- Experience defining PCB design rules, component placement, high-speed routing, and SI/PI considerations.
- Proven experience in board bring-up, platform debug, and cross-disciplinary problem solving.
- Nice-to-have: experience with embedded, telecom, or RF platforms; thermal/mechanical integration reviews; silicon validation, electrical characterization, or test card design.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Electronics & Communication, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field - or equivalent practical experience.
