FPGA Engineer, MQS Center for Quantum Computing
KGSJob Title
FPGA Engineer, MQS Center for Quantum Computing
Role Summary
Join the Models, Quantum, and Silicon (MQS) Center for Quantum Computing to develop FPGA-based components of a quantum control platform. You will implement RTL and embedded software, integrate hardware and software at the hardware/software interface, and deliver low-latency, high-throughput functionality required for experimental quantum computing.
This role is on-site at the lab on the Caltech campus in Pasadena, CA and works closely with quantum research scientists and software engineers.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Candidates should have approximately 3+ years of professional software development experience and 3+ years of industry FPGA development; 2+ years of embedded software development experience is expected.
Responsibilities
Deliver FPGA subsystems and embedded software that meet high-level experimental requirements and integrate with the lab's software stack.
- Work with stakeholders to gather and refine hardware/software requirements.
- Propose architectural and micro-architectural updates to the control platform to meet latency, bandwidth, and resource goals.
- Implement RTL subsystems in Verilog or SystemVerilog.
- Develop embedded software in C, C++ or Rust for near-real-time tasks.
- Verify and validate designs in simulation and on bench-top / real-world hardware.
- Integrate new features into the Python-based experimental software stack.
- Perform hardware bring-up and debugging of network adapters and peripheral interfaces.
- Collaborate with other software and hardware engineers and quantum scientists to roll out features across the platform.
Requirements
Must-have:
- 3+ years of industry FPGA development experience.
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
- 2+ years developing embedded software in C, C++, or Rust.
- Experience with scripting languages (bash, TCL, Python, etc.).
- Experience performing hardware bring-up and debugging (Ethernet adapters, SPI/I2C, etc.).
- Experience with standard communication interfaces such as USB, PCIe, and Ethernet.
Nice-to-have / Preferred:
- Experience with soft-core RISC-V implementations.
- Experience with Xilinx SoC platforms and Xilinx MPSoC-specific bring-up.
- Familiarity with high-level synthesis (HLS) tools.
- Experience developing RTOS applications and low-level device drivers or kernel work on ARM/Xilinx platforms.
- Experience with high-performance networking technologies (DPDK, RDMA) and low-latency distributed computation.
- Knowledge of Linux kernel internals and networking or storage subsystem architectures.
Education Requirements
Required: Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field. Preferred: M.Sc. (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or Computer Science.
