FPGA Engineer II
Role Summary
Join the Multi-Product Power & Digital (MPD) team to design, implement, verify, and sustain production-quality FPGA-based solutions for defense systems (missiles/effectors, radars, electronic warfare). The role focuses on digital FPGA development, architecture support, and delivery from design through production and sustainment.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Typically requires a minimum of 2 years of relevant FPGA/ASIC design or verification experience.
Responsibilities
Deliver and support FPGA designs across the product lifecycle; communicate status and documentation.
- Provide full lifecycle support for production-quality FPGA designs for vendors such as AMD (Xilinx), Intel/Altera, and Microchip (Microsemi).
- Develop FPGA implementations for gigabit serial interfaces, RF DSP, controls, data links, embedded processing, and processor interfaces.
- Assist system architecture development to select parts, define interfaces, and capture CONOPS.
- Design and code in VHDL with emphasis on reliability and maintainability.
- Support design verification using self-checking tests, directed and constrained-random techniques, and track functional/code coverage.
- Integrate and debug FPGA/ASIC hardware in a lab environment.
- Report execution status against budget and schedule using an agile framework.
- Create and maintain requirements, verification plans, and user documentation.
- Function as an individual contributor and present work to technical leadership.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, security clearance, and experience; followed by preferred skills.
Must-have:
- U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance. Active DoD Secret clearance required (existing clearance expected after day 1).
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant FPGA/ASIC design or verification experience.
- Experience with FPGA/ASIC design (VHDL and/or Verilog) or verification (SystemVerilog).
- Experience with vendor devices and toolchains such as AMD Vivado, Intel/Altera Quartus Prime Pro, or Microchip Libero.
- Hands-on experience integrating and debugging FPGA/ASIC in a lab environment.
- Experience with source code management, design reviews, and code release in a team environment.
Nice-to-have:
- Embedded systems experience with ARM, MicroBlaze, or NIOS processors.
- Experience with gigabit serial interfaces and multi-gigabit transceivers (MGTs).
- Constrained-random verification (UVM/SystemVerilog) and high-level synthesis (HLS) experience.
- Experience with vector processors/GPUs, timing closure, clock-domain crossing, reset-domain crossing analysis, and constraint development.
- Demonstrated ability to lead design efforts or small teams.
Education Requirements
Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). Advanced degrees in Electrical Engineering or related STEM fields are valued. A suitable degree may be counted as up to 2 years of experience; equivalent practical experience is also considered.
