Job Title

FPGA Engineer — Custom Compute Hardware (Internship)

Role Summary

Work on FPGA architecture, implementation, verification, and testing for early-stage custom compute accelerators. Collaborate with the founding team on translating architectural concepts into working FPGA prototypes and support system-level integration and performance evaluation.

This is a hands-on R&D internship focused on prototyping accelerator blocks on FPGAs and exploring flows that bridge toward ASIC design.

Experience Level

Internship — entry-level role intended for students or early-career engineers (internship duration/experience expectations not specified).

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include building, validating, and optimizing FPGA implementations of custom processing modules and supporting system integration.

  • Translate architectural concepts into FPGA prototypes.
  • Design and simulate custom processing modules using Verilog, VHDL, or HLS.
  • Implement and validate components on FPGA platforms using tools such as Vivado, Quartus, or OpenCL-based flows.
  • Benchmark performance and optimize latency, area, throughput, and memory bandwidth trade-offs.
  • Build testbenches, run timing and area analysis, and assist with system-level integration.
  • Collaborate with system architects, FPGA designers, and embedded software engineers.
  • Generate and execute FPGA verification test plans and verification matrices.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience for successful candidates.

  • Practical FPGA development experience and RTL or HLS-based design using Verilog/SystemVerilog, VHDL, or C.
  • Experience with FPGA toolflows (Vivado, Quartus, or equivalent).
  • Solid electronic circuit design and electronic systems background.
  • Strong understanding of digital logic fundamentals, including pipelining and timing closure.
  • Experience with digital system partitioning and implementing advanced functions on FPGAs.
  • Familiarity with memory mapping and memory hierarchy on FPGAs.
  • Strong simulation, debugging, and synthesis workflows experience.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced R&D and prototyping environment.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with OpenCL or HLS targeting FPGAs.
  • Hardware/software co-design and system-level integration experience.
  • Project experience in digital design, computer architecture, or embedded systems.
  • Exposure to numerical computing, AI workloads, or custom arithmetic units.
  • Familiarity with ASIC design concepts (synthesis, floorplanning, RTL-to-GDS flows), high-speed interfaces, or analog/mixed-signal concepts.

Education Requirements

B.S. degree or higher in engineering (preferably Electrical Engineering or Computer Science).
