Job Title
FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
Design, develop, verify, and support certification of FPGA-based systems for aerospace and defense applications. Work with cross-functional teams to deliver RTL, verification environments, hardware integration, and certification artifacts for safety-critical airborne electronic hardware.
Experience Level
Mid-level. No specific years of experience were specified in the posting.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities cover RTL development through certification support for FPGA/ASIC projects.
- Capture, decompose, and maintain requirements traceability throughout the development lifecycle.
- Develop RTL designs and simulation environments using VHDL, Verilog, and/or SystemVerilog.
- Create and execute hardware test cases, procedures, and integration activities; perform hardware-based verification.
- Define and implement verification strategies, including frameworks and tools for hardware verification.
- Perform ASIC, FPGA, and SoPC verification using analysis, inspection, simulation, and testing methodologies.
- Participate in design reviews, peer reviews, and technical audits; support FAA SOI audits and certification activities as required.
- Collaborate with program leadership, customers, and cross-functional teams to meet project objectives.
- Recommend process and tool improvements; provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members when appropriate.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and environment; preferred items listed separately.
Must-have:
- RTL development and testbench experience using VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog.
- Experience with simulation and verification environments (UVM experience applicable to testbenches).
- Experience with FPGA development and verification tools such as Questasim, Vivado, Libero, Synplify Pro, or similar.
- Experience with hardware integration, creating/executing hardware test cases, and hardware-based verification.
- Experience working in Linux/Unix environments.
- Proficiency in one or more programming/scripting languages (C, C++, Python, Perl, or similar).
- Familiarity with common data interfaces and protocols such as PCIe, DDR, I2C, Ethernet, ARINC-429, or comparable protocols.
Nice-to-have / Preferred:
- Familiarity with advanced verification methodologies (constrained-random, functional and code coverage, UVM).
- Experience supporting aerospace, avionics, defense, or other safety-critical systems.
- Experience developing DO-254 design assurance artifacts and supporting certification activities.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) or a related field and relevant professional experience; or an advanced degree in a related field with relevant experience. The posting allows equivalent practical experience in place of a degree.
