Job Title
FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
Design and deliver FPGA-based hardware and firmware for embedded systems. Work within an engineering team to implement, verify, and test SystemVerilog/VHDL designs and their integration with SoC and microcontroller components.
Experience Level
Mid-level (no explicit years-of-experience stated). Contractor role.
Responsibilities
Key technical responsibilities for the position include:
- Design, implement, and verify FPGA solutions using SystemVerilog and VHDL to meet functional and timing requirements.
- Integrate FPGA designs with SoC, ARM processors, microcontrollers, and other electronic subsystems.
- Perform root-cause analysis and debug hardware and firmware issues, including signal integrity and timing violations.
- Implement and test signal-processing algorithms in FPGA environments, using MATLAB, Simulink, or Python as needed.
- Create schematics, PCB layouts, and CAD models to support hardware development and mechanical integration.
- Support manufacturing and assembly: provide guidance on PCB/SMT processes, soldering techniques, and inspection standards.
- Manage project tasks and schedules to meet milestones and deliverables.
Requirements
Must-have and preferred technical qualifications.
-
Must-have: Proven FPGA development experience with SystemVerilog and VHDL; firmware development experience in C++ or Python.
-
Must-have: Experience integrating FPGA designs with SoC architectures, ARM processors, microcontrollers, or PLCs.
-
Must-have: Practical debugging skills using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and signal analyzers; strong root-cause analysis ability.
-
Must-have: Familiarity with PCB design concepts, surface-mount technology (SMT), and soldering/assembly practices used in manufacturing.
-
Nice-to-have: Experience with MATLAB/Simulink scripting, Perl or other automation scripting, and vision inspection systems.
-
Nice-to-have: Experience with CAD and mechanical design tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, or MicroStation; knowledge of NEC or other electrical standards.
-
Nice-to-have: Background in mechanical integration aspects for electronic systems.
Education Requirements
Background in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field is indicated; equivalent practical experience is acceptable.
