FPGA Programming Jobs, Level - Entry or Early Career

Job Title

FPGA Engineer

Role Summary

Design, implement, and test FPGA-based digital logic and support integration with firmware and analog/digital hardware. Work with a small engineering team on embedded systems and prototype development for defense-related products.

Experience Level

Entry-level β€” typically 2+ years of relevant engineering experience in electrical or computer engineering or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include FPGA development, hardware/firmware integration, and system-level troubleshooting.

  • Develop and verify FPGA designs (Xilinx preferred) using VHDL or Verilog.
  • Review and interpret circuit schematics and PCB-level hardware to support system debug and design tradeoffs.
  • Integrate FPGA logic with microcontrollers and firmware (C/C++), and collaborate with firmware engineers.
  • Test and debug hardware/firmware/FPGA interactions in lab and on prototype systems.
  • Document designs, test plans, and test results; participate in design reviews.
  • Support manufacturing handoff and resolve hardware/firmware issues found in testing.

Requirements

Hiring emphasis on hands-on FPGA and hardware/firmware troubleshooting skills. Candidate should be able to read circuits and work across hardware and firmware domains.

  • Must-have: Practical experience with FPGA development (Xilinx preferred); ability to read and analyze circuit schematics.
  • Must-have: Experience writing or reading RTL in VHDL or Verilog, or embedded C for microcontrollers.
  • Must-have: Demonstrated electrical engineering experience and ability to debug hardware/firmware interactions in a lab environment.
  • Nice-to-have: Prior internship/co-op or commercial FPGA project experience; familiarity with embedded microcontrollers and C-code integration.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with prototype build, PCB bring-up, and test equipment (oscilloscope, logic analyzer).
  • Willingness to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment and to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.

Education Requirements

B.S. in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering preferred; other engineering degrees may be considered based on experience. Equivalent practical engineering experience is acceptable. The posting indicates approximately 2 or more years of relevant electrical engineering experience is expected.
