Job Title
FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
Design, implement, and verify FPGA-based digital logic for aerospace and defense embedded systems. The role covers the full development lifecycle: architecture definition, RTL coding, simulation, synthesis, timing closure, and lab validation.
Work closely with system architects, software teams, and test engineers to integrate FPGA subsystems into real-time, regulated platforms.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Requires 5+ years of FPGA design and development experience in aerospace, defense, or embedded systems environments.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Develop RTL in VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog for DSP, memory control, data acquisition, and high-speed I/O.
- Perform simulation, synthesis, timing analysis, and place-and-route using industry tools (for example Vivado, Quartus, ModelSim).
- Implement clock domain crossing, reset synchronization, and power-up sequencing best practices to meet timing and reliability goals.
- Integrate FPGA logic with embedded processors, define register maps and interfaces with software teams.
- Validate hardware in the lab using bench testing, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and in-system debugging.
- Maintain documentation, version control, configuration management, and support product release activities.
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and system-level integration and verification.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Proven RTL coding and design experience using VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog.
- Hands-on experience with simulation, synthesis, timing closure, and FPGA toolchains (Vivado, Quartus, ModelSim or equivalent).
- Experience with high-speed interfaces such as PCIe, DDR, Ethernet, or JESD204.
- Familiarity with Xilinx or Intel/Altera FPGAs and their toolflows.
- Hardware debugging skills using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and boundary-scan or in-system debug methods.
- Scripting for automation and test using TCL, Python, or MATLAB.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with regulated development practices (DO-254, MIL-STD) or work on safety- or mission-critical systems.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field is required; Master's degree preferred. (Degree/field language present in the source.)
