FPGA Design Engineer, Senior
Role Summary
The Senior FPGA Design Engineer will design, develop, integrate, verify, and troubleshoot FPGA-based digital systems for advanced radar and missile seeker applications on a program engineering team located in Huntsville, AL.
Work spans firmware development, simulation and verification, hardware bring-up, system integration, and mentorship of junior engineers.
Experience Level
Senior β minimum of 10 years of relevant FPGA and digital systems experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include design, verification, integration, and lifecycle support of FPGA-based systems.
- Design, develop, integrate, and test FPGA-based digital systems for radar and defense applications.
- Develop and maintain FPGA firmware using Verilog, VHDL, and other HDLs.
- Create and execute simulation and verification testbenches; perform synthesis and timing analysis.
- Debug and optimize FPGA designs to meet performance, resource, and reliability targets.
- Integrate firmware with hardware components, embedded processors, and software; support lab bring-up and system verification.
- Implement and troubleshoot communication interfaces and protocols (RS-232, RS-422, UART, SPI, I2C).
- Develop and implement DSP functions including filters, FFTs, modulation/demodulation, and error-correction algorithms.
- Support design reviews, documentation, test planning, customer presentations, and mentor junior engineers.
- Evaluate emerging FPGA technologies, tools, and methodologies to improve capabilities and efficiency.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, clearance, and experience.
- Minimum of 10 years of FPGA design and digital systems development experience.
- Extensive hands-on experience with Verilog and VHDL and HDL-based design flows.
- Experience with FPGA simulation, verification, synthesis, timing analysis, debugging, and hardware integration.
- Proficiency with FPGA toolchains such as Xilinx Vivado, Intel/Altera Quartus, Synplify, ModelSim, Verdi, or equivalents.
- Strong understanding of digital logic design, digital electronics, and FPGA architectures.
- Thorough knowledge and implementation experience of DSP concepts and algorithms.
- Experience implementing and troubleshooting serial communication protocols (RS-232, RS-422, UART, SPI, I2C).
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills; ability to translate requirements into engineering solutions.
- U.S. Citizenship and an active Secret security clearance required, with ability to maintain the clearance level.
Education Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
