Formal Verification Engineer

Role Summary

Work on formal verification and machine-checked proofs for MatX hardware and compiler stack, collaborating with architecture, compiler, and silicon verification teams. The role focuses on applying model checking and interactive theorem proving to ensure correctness from compiler IR down to RTL and microarchitecture.

This is a hybrid role based in Mountain View; the team requires on-site presence Tuesdays–Thursdays.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include formal verification of RTL and proving compiler-to-hardware correctness.

  • Apply model checking and formal property verification to RTL blocks, memory subsystems, and interconnects (e.g. SVA/PSL, bounded/unbounded proofs).
  • Develop and maintain machine-checked proofs for compiler transformations and lowering passes.
  • Embed hardware description languages and simulator models into interactive theorem provers and prove functional and microarchitectural properties.
  • Translate system correctness goals into tractable proof obligations in collaboration with architecture, compiler, and silicon teams.
  • Drive methodology and integrate formal tools (e.g. JasperGold, SymbiYosys, VC-Formal or equivalents) into verification workflows.

Requirements

Must-have practical skills are listed first; followed by useful but optional qualifications.

  • Must-have: Hands-on experience with hardware model checking, writing SVA/PSL properties, and completing formal proof targets at block or subsystem level.
  • Must-have: Practical experience with at least one interactive theorem prover (Lean, Coq, Isabelle/HOL, Agda, or similar).
  • Must-have: Strong cross-domain understanding of RTL microarchitecture and compiler IR to identify meaningful correctness properties.
  • Must-have: Ability to work in a small, fast-moving team and take broad ownership of verification efforts.
  • Must-have: Authorized to work in the United States and able to work from the Mountain View office Tuesdays–Thursdays.
  • Must-have: Ability to comply with U.S. export control requirements for access to controlled information.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience embedding an HDL, IR, or ISA into a theorem prover and using that embedding for proofs.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with compiler correctness proofs or verified compilation (e.g., CompCert-style or translation validation).
  • Nice-to-have: Familiarity with formal tools and flows such as JasperGold, VC-Formal, SymbiYosys, and provers like Lean 4, Coq, or Isabelle/HOL.
