Firmware Validation Engineer

Role Summary

The Firmware Validation Engineer designs and executes validation activities to ensure firmware functionality, reliability, and conformance to specifications for data-center-class products. The role works within a cross-functional engineering team in the Data Center Group to validate, debug, and improve firmware and associated software/hardware interactions.

The position focuses on creating validation environments, writing test plans and documentation, performing root-cause analysis, and collaborating with stakeholders to resolve issues.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Posting specifies 3 years of software/firmware validation experience with a Bachelor's degree or 2 years with a Master's degree.

Responsibilities

Core responsibilities include test design, execution, debugging, and process improvement.

• Design and develop software validation environments and test harnesses to exercise firmware functionality.
• Create validation plans and methodologies to achieve coverage of system and subsystem requirements.
• Execute validation tests, analyze results, reproduce and debug failures, and verify fixes.
• Perform root-cause analysis, recommend corrective actions, and follow through with implementation across teams.
• Document and maintain validation standards, procedures, and test artifacts.
• Evaluate and adopt new validation tools and methods to improve quality and efficiency.
• Provide technical support for customer-reported firmware issues and help drive timely resolutions.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience; preferred attributes listed separately.

• Must-have: Hands-on experience in software or firmware validation and debugging within complex hardware-software environments (see Experience Level for years guideline).
• Must-have: Practical Python scripting experience for test automation and validation tasks.
• Must-have: Strong debugging and root-cause analysis capabilities.
• Must-have: Familiarity with software validation processes, test scope planning, and writing test documentation.
• Nice-to-have: Experience providing customer support for firmware issues and working across multidisciplinary teams.
• Nice-to-have: Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects, and willingness to adopt new tools and methodologies.

Education Requirements

Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree is also referenced. Experience guideline: 3 years of software/firmware validation experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 2 years with a Master's degree.
