Firmware Engineer Intern, MS - Summer 2027
Role Summary
Work on embedded firmware and driver development for advanced hardware platforms used in data center, storage, networking, and AI systems. Collaborate with hardware, system, QA, and customer teams to implement, test, and deliver robust firmware and trusted software components.
Experience Level
Internship — Master's-level intern intended for candidates currently enrolled in a Master's program.
Responsibilities
Typical responsibilities include:
- Develop and maintain embedded firmware and device drivers for protocols such as SPI, I2C, I3C, UART, PCIe, and NVMe.
- Implement RTOS-based features and trusted firmware/security stacks for SoCs.
- Create automation scripts (Python, shell/bash) for testing, failure analysis, and infrastructure management.
- Participate in the full product lifecycle: design, implementation, testing, validation, and release.
- Design and execute unit, system, and integration tests; support CI pipelines (Jenkins) and regression planning.
- Support lab testing, debugging, tool development, and customer documentation.
- Debug complex hardware/software issues, perform root cause analysis, and manage fixes via issue tracking (e.g., Jira).
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate, optimize performance, and prepare customer deliverables.
Requirements
Minimum qualifications and important eligibility:
- Proficiency in Python and/or C.
- Comfortable with Windows and Linux development environments.
- Understanding of computer architecture, embedded systems, or networking fundamentals (OSI model, TCP/IP).
- Strong problem-solving skills and clear verbal and written communication.
- Eligible to access export-controlled information as required by U.S. law; non-U.S. citizens may be subject to export license review.
Nice-to-have technical experience:
- Version control tools (Git, GitHub, Gerrit); Linux tools (GDB, makefiles) and bash scripting.
- Familiarity with ARM or RISC-V architectures, TrustZone, Caliptra, or Trusted Firmware.
- RTOS architecture, device driver development, and communication protocol experience (USB, MDIO, PCIe).
- Security protocols and cryptography (IPSec, TLS/SSL, SPDM, digital certificates).
- DSP concepts (equalizers, filters, ADC/DAC, FFE/DFE) and networking components (Ethernet, SERDES).
- CI/CD familiarity (Jenkins), lab automation, GUI or SDK development, and regression testing tools.
Education Requirements
Currently enrolled in a Master's degree (MS) in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with expected graduation between Fall 2027 and Summer 2028. PhD intern candidates are mentioned for potential additional compensation. No alternative equivalency language was provided.
