Firmware Engineer Intern, BS - Summer 2027

Role Summary

Internship to develop and test embedded firmware and device drivers for Marvell hardware platforms (data center, AI devices, SSD controllers, DSP/networking chips). Work with hardware and software teams to implement, validate, and ship firmware features, automation, and test infrastructure.

This role may require access to export-controlled technology; applicants must be eligible under applicable U.S. export control laws.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship for undergraduate students (internship position).

Responsibilities

Primary tasks the intern will perform include:

  • Develop and maintain embedded firmware and device drivers for SoCs, controllers, and networking/DSP chips.
  • Implement firmware features for communication protocols (SPI, I2C, I3C, UART, PCIe, NVMe) and RTOS-based systems.
  • Create and run unit, system, and integration tests; support regression planning and CI (e.g., Jenkins).
  • Write automation and tooling (Python, shell/bash) for testing, failure analysis, provisioning, and lab workflows.
  • Perform lab testing, debugging, data analysis, and prepare customer-facing documentation or proofs of concept.
  • Collaborate with Hardware, System, QA, and Customer Solutions teams for integration and performance optimization.
  • Investigate complex hardware/software issues, perform root-cause analysis, and track fixes via issue trackers.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and attributes:

  • Proficiency in Python and/or C.
  • Comfortable working in Windows and Linux development environments.
  • Understanding of computer architecture, embedded systems, and networking fundamentals (OSI model, TCP/IP).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and clear verbal/written communication.
  • Experience with debugging tools and test/CI workflows.

Nice-to-have skills:

  • Familiarity with Git/GitHub/Gerrit, Makefiles, GDB, IDEs, and bash scripting.
  • Experience with ARM or RISC-V, TrustZone/Caliptra/Trusted Firmware, RTOS architecture, and device drivers.
  • Knowledge of security protocols (IPSec, TLS/SSL, SPDM), cryptography, and trusted firmware concepts.
  • Exposure to DSP concepts (equalizers, filters, ADC/DAC, FFE/DFE), SERDES, Ethernet, and high-speed PHYs.
  • Experience with Jenkins CI, lab automation, GUI/SDK development, and system integration testing.

Education Requirements

Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with expected graduation between Fall 2027 and Summer 2028.

Expected base pay range: USD $26–$52 per hour. This role is eligible for Marvell bonus and equity programs and standard intern benefits.
