Firmware Engineer
Role Summary
Work on IO diagnostics for AMD Instinct GPUs and EPYC CPUs to develop, validate and automate diagnostic test suites that cover high-performance I/O subsystems across pre-silicon and post-silicon stages.
The role is on the IO Diagnostic Engineering team and requires cross-functional collaboration with silicon design, firmware, platform and program teams to ensure hardware features are exercised and validated.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Preferred experience guidance: MS + 6 years or BS + 8 years of relevant software/firmware development and system-level verification experience.
Responsibilities
The role focuses on planning, developing, validating and automating diagnostic tests for cross-BU programs across pre- and post-silicon phases.
- Plan and develop diagnostic test content and automation for I/O subsystems.
- Translate high-level requirements into measurable diagnostic coverage and detailed test items.
- Develop and verify diagnostic tests in emulation/pre-silicon environments to reduce post-silicon risk.
- Support silicon bring-up, execute functional tests, debug issues, and optimize test time while maintaining coverage.
- Collaborate with HW designers, firmware, platform and program teams to resolve HW/SW functional issues.
- Drive continuous improvement in diagnostic coverage, code quality and development processes.
- Lead test innovation and strategic initiatives informed by prior program learnings and best practices.
Requirements
Core technical and interpersonal requirements; preferred items listed separately.
- Strong software development fundamentals and system-level debugging skills.
- Experience with large-scale system software development on Linux.
- Proficiency in C/C++ and scripting languages such as Python, Perl or Ruby.
- Experience with system-level verification and debugging of hardware/software interactions.
- Ability to work closely with hardware designers/architects and cross-functional teams to solve functional HW/SW issues.
- Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
- Self-directed team player with effective written and spoken English communication skills.
- Nice-to-have: hands-on ASIC bring-up experience, familiarity with BIOS/GPU stacks, and experience with protocol analyzers.
- Nice-to-have: knowledge of high-speed I/O and virtualization technologies (PCIe, DMA, IOMMU/VT-d) and experience with PCIe products.
- Nice-to-have: understanding of x86 and/or ARM architectures.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. Master's degree preferred; equivalent experience accepted.
