Firmware Engineer

Role Summary

Embedded firmware engineer responsible for designing, implementing, verifying, and maintaining low-level firmware, middleware, diagnostics, and sample applications for optical PHY chipsets within Broadcom's Physical Layer Products (PLP) group.

Works on feature development and product maintenance across the firmware lifecycle and collaborates closely with cross-functional hardware and systems teams.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Design and develop firmware for new products and maintain legacy firmware.
  • Implement and verify embedded software for real-time systems (embedded C, low-level modules).
  • Troubleshoot and debug firmware on embedded targets.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including system, analog, and digital hardware designers.
  • Develop drivers and inter-processor communication mechanisms.
  • Define and promote standards, architecture governance, design patterns, and code hygiene.
  • Participate in recruiting and mentoring to grow the firmware team.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience:

  • Strong software development and documentation skills.
  • Proven experience developing in C and ARM assembly for embedded targets.
  • Experience programming for real-time systems and understanding of multithreading/concurrency.
  • Experience with multiprocessor programming and inter-processor communication.
  • Driver development experience (MDIO, I2C, SPI, etc.).
  • Strong debugging skills on embedded platforms.

Nice-to-have / complementary skills:

  • Experience with ARM processors.
  • Windows software development using Visual C/C++.
  • Linux development experience.
  • Awareness of licensing restrictions when interfacing proprietary software with GPL/LGPL/ASL components.

Education Requirements
