Final Test Engineer

Role Summary

The Final Test Engineer performs hands-on quality control testing and troubleshooting of newly built ion implanters in a manufacturing environment and at customer sites worldwide. The role supports multiple subsystems (control, vacuum, virtual machines, robotics, ion beam delivery), documents test interventions, and helps enable production readiness.

Position requires shift work and up to 20% travel, including international destinations. Axcelis is an equal opportunity employer.

Responsibilities

Core duties include testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and onsite customer support.

  • Execute quality control testing on newly built ion implant systems to validate functionality and production readiness.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose failures across mechanical, electrical, and control subsystems; implement corrective actions to continue test progression.
  • Document in detail all interventions and corrective actions taken during test for use by build and design teams.
  • Support onsite customer testing and acceptance at customer locations to enable move to production.
  • Work hands-on with control systems, vacuum systems, virtual machines, robotics, and ion beam generation/delivery subsystems.
  • Collaborate with assemblers, design and software engineers, management, and customer or vendor engineers/operators.
  • Operate on assigned shift schedules and follow established test procedures and safety practices.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and job conditions.

  • Practical, hands-on troubleshooting experience with complex electromechanical or mechatronic systems (examples: control systems, vacuum, robotics, motion control).
  • Ability to follow and produce detailed test documentation and root-cause write-ups.
  • Comfort working in a manufacturing/test environment and performing hands-on assembly and diagnostics.
  • Willingness to travel up to ~20%, including international travel to Asia and Europe.
  • Willingness and ability to work required shifts (first, second with shift differential, and compressed weekend schedules where applicable).
  • Strong interpersonal skills for cross-functional teamwork and customer-facing support.
  • Nice-to-have: prior experience with semiconductor equipment, ion implanters, field service, or test engineering roles.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering or physical science discipline is required (examples: Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, Biomedical Engineering, or Physics). Level will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
