Field Sales Technologist

Role Summary

Provide on-site technical support and application engineering to customers using Altera semiconductor and FPGA products. Support sales efforts to secure design wins by resolving complex hardware and software issues, proposing system architectures, and delivering proofs-of-concept.

Compensation range: $209,200 - $308,200 USD (salary + incentive; actual compensation varies by location and experience).

Experience Level

Mid-level. The role requires 5+ years of experience in field support, applications engineering, or customer-facing technical roles within the semiconductor industry.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include customer-facing technical work, troubleshooting, and collaboration with sales and engineering teams.

  • Support customers in North America (with potential worldwide coverage).
  • Perform customer application work: design conversions, simulations, system architecture proposals, RTL design assistance, benchmarking, and POC creation.
  • Analyze and debug silicon interfaces such as DSP, memory controllers, PCIe/DMA, SerDes, and networking.
  • Support vertical segments (AI, data center, communications, video); familiarity with one or two verticals expected.
  • Drive design wins by assisting sales on critical opportunities and technical engagements.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware and software issues at customer sites.
  • Provide technical guidance, training, and best-practice recommendations to customers.
  • Collaborate with internal engineering, sales, and support teams to escalate and resolve complex issues.
  • Travel extensively to customer locations as required.

Requirements

Must-have technical and interpersonal skills for direct customer engagement and product support.

  • Strong understanding of FPGA architecture, design flows, and development tools (for example, Quartus Prime).
  • Solid digital design experience, including RTL design and related software knowledge.
  • Proven ability to debug complex hardware and software systems.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks, and operate in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to travel extensively to customer sites.
  • Nice-to-have: experience with Windows and Linux, and scripting (Python, Perl).

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field (as stated in the posting).
