Field Applications Engineer
Role Summary
Provide technical field support for Broadcom Core Switching Group software (XGS-Tomahawk series) to top cloud customers running AI/ML clusters. Responsible for integrating and debugging switch SDKs, advising on APIs and traffic management, and enabling customer deployments.
Position sits within the sales organization and acts as a technical liaison between customers, software development, and factory application teams to influence product direction.
Experience Level
Senior β based on posting requirements this role expects 10+ to 12+ years of experience in embedded networking software design and development.
Responsibilities
Primary customer-facing and technical enablement responsibilities.
- Support top cloud customers deploying XGS-Tomahawk switches in AI clusters; diagnose and resolve software issues.
- Help customers run SoNIC and switch development kits within their OS/platform environments.
- Analyze large codebases, write patches, and propose software fixes and API usage for traffic management, congestion control, and scheduling.
- Create and deliver SDK overview and technical presentations to customers and sales teams.
- Act as technical liaison between customers, software development, and factory application teams; capture requirements for next-generation products.
- Collaborate with Field Sales Engineers to identify customer needs and drive product adoption.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, authorization, and behavioral expectations.
- Deep knowledge of Ethernet L2/L3 switching, packet processing, and switching architecture.
- Ability to read, understand, and modify large codebases; experience writing patches.
- Familiarity with embedded Linux and networking software stacks.
- Strong verbal and written communication; proven customer-facing skills and ability to build relationships.
- Self-starter, able to prioritize, work under pressure, and adapt to changing requirements.
- US permanent resident or US citizen required; role is onsite in Broadcom San Jose office and is not relocation eligible.
- Prior field applications engineer experience (approximately 2 years) is highly desired but not mandatory.
- Track record of successful deliveries in networking software projects.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree (BSEE or BSCS) with 12+ years' experience in embedded networking software design and development, or Master's degree with 10+ years' experience in embedded networking software design and development.
