Field Application Engineer

Role Summary

The Field Application Engineer provides technical support and consulting to customers and the sales team to drive design-ins and design wins. The role focuses on applying hardware and application design expertise to influence customer designs, coordinate with suppliers, and maximize return on engineering investment.

The position involves pre- and post-sales technical support, product demonstrations, competitive analysis, and collaboration with internal teams and suppliers to progress customer initiatives.

Experience Level

Entry-level / Early Career — typically 2–3 years of relevant hardware design experience (FPGA and/or embedded systems). Candidates with more than 3 years of technical application support may be considered for senior-level roles.

Responsibilities

Core responsibilities include technical customer engagement, design support, and cross-functional coordination.

  • Provide design-in support and technical consulting to customers to drive demand and design wins.
  • Collaborate with sales, suppliers, and internal engineering resources across pre- and post-sales activities.
  • Perform technical calibrations, research, and solution selling to influence customer designs.
  • Conduct supplier trainings and product demonstrations (in person and remotely).
  • Manage supplier and customer expectations; build and maintain stakeholder relationships.
  • Identify decision-makers and key relationships within supplier and customer organizations.
  • Participate in strategic branch meetings and quarterly business reviews.
  • Produce periodic statistical reports and perform competitive analysis.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience; additional desirable skills listed separately.

  • 2–3 years in hardware design, preferably with FPGA and/or embedded system design experience.
  • Solid experience at chip level and platform design; strong application-design background.
  • Experience with Verilog or VHDL coding.
  • Experience with Arm 32-bit processor platforms; familiarity with OpenCL or OpenCV is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organization, and time-management skills.
  • Excellent customer-service, interpersonal, presentation, and English language skills.
  • Proficient with Windows-based office tools, including spreadsheets.
  • Customer-focused attitude: team player, proactive, results-oriented, and high energy.

Nice-to-have:

  • Established supplier and customer relationships within the electronic components industry.

Education Requirements

University degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
