Fall 2026 Internship - Lumerical Photonics Software Development Intern
Role Summary
3-month Fall internship on the Lumerical photonics software team in Vancouver. Work within a cross-functional squad under the supervision of a Senior R&D Engineer to develop and maintain photonic simulation software used for virtual prototyping and design optimization.
Expect hands-on development of production-quality scientific code, participation in agile practices, code reviews, and presentations to internal teams.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship. Intended for students entering their third year or later of an undergraduate or graduate program.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include software development, collaboration, and delivering tested code for photonics simulation tools.
- Implement efficient, maintainable, and tested C++ code for photonic simulation features.
- Work with a cross-functional squad to understand requirements and deliver on specifications.
- Follow agile practices: plan work, create pull requests, and participate in code reviews.
- Use development tools and pipelines to build, test, and deploy software.
- Present progress and results to teammates and other business-unit stakeholders.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and preferred additional experience for successful candidates.
- Must-have: Strong experience developing with C++17 in academic or commercial projects; solid problem-solving skills; effective written and verbal communication; ability to collaborate in a team.
- Familiarity with development tools such as Visual Studio or VSCode, CMake, Git, and build/deployment pipelines.
- Available full-time for a 3-month Fall internship starting September 2026 and able to work in-person at the Vancouver office (some hybrid flexibility).
- Nice-to-have: Experience with plotting/graphics libraries (VTK, OpenGL), Copilot/AI coding tools, and automated build/test/deploy pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions).
Education Requirements
Currently pursuing a Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; must be entering third year or later in their degree program.
