Failure Analysis Planner & On-site Engineer

Role Summary

Part of the Board & Component Quality organization, this role plans, coordinates, and provides on-site technical oversight of Level 1 failure analysis (L1 FA) and RMA intake at a third-party RMA recovery center. The position ensures timely execution of L1 FA, reviews results, and determines disposition or routing to AMD Quality Service Centers for deeper L2 analysis.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include planning FA activities, providing on-site oversight, reviewing results, and coordinating handoffs between AMD and third-party centers.

• Plan and prioritize FA activities for RMAs arriving at the third-party RMA recovery and L1 FA center.
• Provide on-site technical oversight of RMA intake, incoming inspection, triage readiness, and L1 FA execution.
• Monitor L1 FA progress, test status, failure symptoms, screening outcomes, and preliminary findings.
• Review L1 results and determine shipping disposition or routing to AMD Quality Service Centers for L2 FA.
• Maintain visibility of RMA status, priorities, blockers, aging units, and shipment plans; escalate risks before they impact turnaround time.
• Coordinate with Quality Service Centers, RMA program management, PLQ, CQE, logistics, and internal stakeholders to ensure accurate dispositions and smooth handoffs.
• Validate completeness of RMA documentation, evidence, pictures, logs, and L1 FA summaries before release or shipment.
• Track FA planning decisions, outcomes, dispositions, and handoff status in the designated AMD database.
• Support failure mode classification, identify repeat issues, and drive continuous improvement of intake, reporting, disposition logic, and processes.

Requirements

Must-have skills and constraints are listed first; several preferred experiences follow.

• Must: Experience in RMA operations, repair, debug, validation, failure analysis, manufacturing, or quality engineering.
• Must: Knowledge of PCBA and GPU product diagnostics, failure analysis and debug techniques, and manufacturing test workflows.
• Must: Ability to interpret failure data, test logs, inspection results, and technical documentation to make disposition and escalation decisions.
• Must: Proficiency with RMA tracking, reporting, and documentation tools (including Excel); working familiarity with Windows and Linux test environments.
• Must: Ability to read schematics, component datasheets, and board-level documentation.
• Preferred: Experience with server systems, GPU-based platforms, data center infrastructure, HPC environments, and AI/ML workloads.
• Preferred: Familiarity with IPC-A-610 visual inspection standards and high-volume RMA operations.
• Must be eligible to work in the location without visa sponsorship (role is not eligible for visa sponsorship).

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Electronics Engineering is required.
