Job Title

Experimental Quantum Engineer - R&D

Role Summary

Operate and advance QuantWare's cryogenic measurement infrastructure to enable high-throughput characterization of quantum processor prototypes. Work with Design, Fabrication, and Measurement teams to collect and analyse data, debug failures, and improve test processes and automation.

This is an engineering role focused on hands-on cryogenic systems, microwave measurement, automation, and scaling laboratory workflows.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Years of experience not specified in the posting.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include maintaining cryogenic testbeds, developing automation, and performing prototype measurements.

  • Operate, maintain, and upgrade dilution refrigerators, pulse-tube and 4 K cryostats, and related cryogenic systems.
  • Develop and automate Python-based measurement and instrumentation control routines for high-throughput device characterisation.
  • Perform precision microwave/RF measurements on R&D prototypes and analyse results to produce actionable insights.
  • Lead cross-functional root-cause investigations with Design, Fabrication, and Measurement teams.
  • Design and run cryogenic reliability and scaling studies to improve throughput and robustness.
  • Standardise experiment documentation, data pipelines, and technical reporting to enable reproducibility and knowledge sharing.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience, plus a few desirable qualifications.

  • Must-have: Hands-on experience with low-temperature cryogenic systems (dilution refrigerators, pulse-tube or 4 K cryostats, wet helium/nitrogen systems).
  • Must-have: Practical experience with microwave/RF measurement techniques for superconducting qubits or other solid-state devices.
  • Must-have: Proficiency in Python for data analysis, instrumentation control, and test automation; experience using Git for version control.
  • Must-have: Experience performing device characterisation, data analysis, and structured troubleshooting/root-cause analysis.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience scaling measurement setups for high throughput and designing reliability studies.
  • Nice-to-have: Familiarity with superconducting qubit hardware stacks and automation frameworks.

Education Requirements

MSc in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field is expected. A PhD is listed as a plus.
