ESD & EMC Immunity Characterization Engineer

Role Summary

Perform high-precision electrical characterization and immunity testing for Renesas products, focusing on ESD and EMC Immunity measurement techniques. Lead development and improvement of measurement methods, laboratory operations, and the selection and commissioning of specialized test equipment.

Work closely with the global ESD team and device/product design engineers to analyze results and drive corrective actions that improve product quality and reliability. This position follows a hybrid work model (two remote days per week; required in-office days Tuesday–Thursday).

Experience Level

Mid-level: Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in ESD/EMS measurement and evaluation is required; 10+ years preferred.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include leading measurement activities, managing lab resources, and delivering actionable analysis to engineering teams.

• Develop and improve high-precision measurement techniques for ESD and EMC Immunity using specialized equipment.
• Plan and execute characterization experiments; prepare evaluation samples (dies, wafers, packages, PCBs) and test fixtures.
• Select, install, commission, and maintain measurement instruments and laboratory equipment; manage lab operations.
• Perform waveform and data analysis to interpret device behavior under ESD/EMS stress and produce clear technical reports.
• Provide technical feedback to design and product teams and support root-cause investigations and corrective actions.
• Lead introduction of new test methods and equipment, and document procedures and best practices.
• Collaborate with global ESD, device design, and product design teams to ensure evaluation supports product requirements.

Requirements

Required and preferred qualifications, focused on measurable hands-on experience.

• Must-have: At least 5 years of practical experience with ESD device characterization equipment and measurements (e.g., HBM/MM/TLP/Vf-TLP), latch-up pulser use, and ESD/EMS testing related to DPI and IEC 61000-4-2/3/4/5.
• Must-have: Practical experience preparing evaluation samples (silicon die, wafers, packages, PCB boards) and managing measurement fixtures and instruments.
• Must-have: Experience in waveform analysis and the ability to interpret device characteristics under ESD/EMS stress, producing clear analyses and recommendations.
• Must-have: Proven ability to respond quickly, propose flexible technical solutions, and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams.
• Must-have: Experience leading equipment selection, installation, and lab commissioning activities.
• Nice-to-have: 10+ years of relevant experience preferred.
• Nice-to-have: Deep knowledge of measurement principles and ESD/EMS standards.
